This guitar has a lot of history. Bryan and I both spent a lot of time loving and hating this guitar. It has been a lot of years so it’s hard for me to remember the exact chain of events that landed this infernal instrument into our hands but I’ll give it my best shot. I believe in 1999 our mutual friend Dennis bought this Epiphone Les Paul through the Musician’s Friend catalog which he used in our first band Kohler. Cranking out classic first band hits like “12 Inch Long Cigarette”, “Betsy Ross (Bitch Made A Flag)” and my favorite “You Were A Bad Neighbor So I Buried Your Baby.”
While the guitar served its purpose well for Dennis, it soon became the object of our other friend Tim’s desire. Tim loved the action on this bad boy so much that he made Dennis an offer he couldn’t refuse. $100 dollars an 18 pack of Old Milwaukee later and Tim found himself to be the proud owner of this fine beast. Keep in mind that none of us had ever played anything better than this fine piece of Ecuadorian craftsmanship, so our understanding of “finer” instruments was a little off.
Under Tim’s ownership the guitar was used as his main instrument in the always killer band NERD. It also went through several transformations such as the removal of the bridge pick up, the addition, removal, and re-addition of several hundred band stickers. As well as a complete rewiring at the hands of 4 very drunk 15 year olds with nothing better to do on a small town Saturday night. All this while for some reason unknown to Bryan and I we began to fall madly in love with this pile of garbage. Eventually Tim just gave it to Bryan after weeks of constant pestering about where the guitar was and if he would be willing to sell it. Bryan put new tuners on it, added a new pick up and rewired the poor bastard one more time.
Over the next few years we eventually found ways, be it legitimate or otherwise, to earn money to buy ourselves better instruments. But we could not seem to get away from this guitar. By this point the guitar had seen a significant amount of wear and tear. The tuners refused to hold, the pick ups worked about 40% of the time and the strings probably hadn’t been changed in 3 years. I had somehow gotten my hands on the guitar at this point and I spent most of my afternoons beating it to death in my garage, playing along with The Ramones and Against Me!
Somehow along the road the guitar got put in a case and put on a shelf not to be played or picked up for some years. Then a few weeks back we were going through our equipment and there it was. It was still the same beast that we had put through so much learning what it meant to play an electric guitar. It still has beer and sweat stains on it. It’s still a weapon. We hope that whoever wins this bad boy gets as much enjoyment and frustration as we got out of it.
Sean.
